20-year-old arrested for murder, rape

A 20-year-old person has been arrested for raping and murdering a 21-year-old degree student near Javanhalli in Sira taluk in Tumakuru District.

Addressing a press conference, Inspector General of Police, Central Range, Arun Chakravarthy said that the accused Rangaraju, resident of Guligenahalli, used to rear cows in the field on the outskirts of the village and would keep an eye on the student everyday who would get down from the bus and walk back home.

On June 25, around 3.30 p.m., when the student got down from the bus, the accused allegedly dragged her behind a bush, gagged her mouth with her dupatta, cut her neck with a hacksaw blade and then raped her.

He was arrested on Thursday night at his residence in Guligenahalli. The team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police, B. Vijaykumar has been awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, for nabbing the accused, by the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Mr. Chakravarthy said.

Police quarters

Mr. Chakravarthy said that a proposal has been sent to the Police Housing Corporation to repair the police quarters which is in bad condition and also to construct new police quarters in six districts including Tumakuru coming under Central range.

Superintendent of Police, Karthik Reddy, Additional Superintendent of Police, R. Lakshman and other police officers were present.
