12 undergraduate medical students lose seats

While three have got admission elsewhere in the State, the rest will participate in the third round of counselling

In a year when undergraduate medical seats are hard to get, doors were closed on 12 students who were allotted seats in Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore (KIMS) through counselling by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK).

They were told that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had approved fewer seats than what was announced. COMEDK Chief Executive A.S. Srikanth said KIMS had an intake of 150 last year, of which 60 were to be allotted through COMEDK and 60 through the government.

Notification

“On June 28, the government gave a notification saying 150 seats are available. We had a doubt that the intake may be reduced to 120, but we notified it as 150 as per the government notification,” he said. After all the seats were allotted in the college, the authorities realised that the MCI had sanctioned intake for 48 seats only.

Now, of the 12 students, three have got admissions in colleges outside Karnataka, while the remaining nine will be allowed to participate in the third round of counselling, Mr. Srikanth said. The third round is expected to begin on August 20.
