The State government has sanctioned 100 industrial training institutes (ITIs) in various districts based on the recommendations of its legislators, and they will begin to function from the next academic year (2014-15).
In the first phase, the government has identified locations for establishing 92 institutes. Of them, seven will come up in Mysore district. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recommended five institutes for the Mysore district, while Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R.V. Deshpande recommended two for Uttara Kannada.
Minister of State for Labour P.T. Parameshwara Naik recommended nine institutes, eight of them in Bellary district as he is the district in-charge Minister for Bellary.

Of the 92 institutes, a majority of them was sanctioned based on the recommendations of Congress MLAs. Only two MLCs recommended institutes — Minister for Information Technology and Biotechnology S.R. Patil and D.H. Shankaramurthy.
Addressing presspersons, Mr. Naik said the department has sanctioned institutes to various backward taluks based on the recommendations of the legislators. Recommendations of MLAs of Opposition parties have also been taken into consideration, he said.
In the second phase, locations would be identified to set up eight more institutes. A sum of Rs. 10 crore will be spent on each institute, including development of infrastructure. Depending on admission of students, on an average, about 15 faculty would be recruited to each institute, Mr. Naik said.

At present there are 152 government ITIs and more than 800 in the private sector in the State. Nearly 70,000 students seek admission for different ITI grades every year.
New academy
A construction academy will be established on 20 acres at Doddaballapur in Bangalore Rural district, with an estimated investment of Rs. 200 crore. It will provide high-level training in various grades, Mr. Naik said.
Twenty-five government institutes which are 25 years old will be upgraded utilising Rs. 2 crore for each institute, he said.
Buildings
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs. 109 crore for construction of buildings for 43 institutes.
National Masters Trainers Institute, a centre for training master trainers, would be set up on 10 acres of land at Angatti village in Nandi hobli of Chickballapur taluk. It would be set up in memory of Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
It will be established on PPP model, and L&T has commenced training from October 2, 2013, onwards. The main objective of the centre is to create top-class master trainers with the help of world-class trainers from vocational technology, and to scale up the skills of the technicians in the country to international standards.
