Vice-chancellor of Gulbarga University S.R. Niranjana has said that shortage of funds in science and technology sector is affecting the quality of research by Indian scientists.
Inaugurating the interaction programme organised by Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat and the Department of Science and Technology, in Kalaburagi on Tuesday, he said that the lack of funds was resulting in compromise on research quality.
Prof. Niranjana said the government’s main focus was the space and defence sectors.

Even though India has made significant contributions in various fields, India stands in 10th with 3 per cent contribution in science. The U.S. contributes 28 per cent, followed by China at 10 per cent and Brazil at 6 per cent. Prof. Niranjana asked parents to reconsider spending huge amounts on Medical and Engineering seats, and consider other options in the field too.
Eminent scientist and former Deputy Director of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Prabhakar J. Bhat said that India will end its dependence on the U.S. for operating Global Positioning System (GPS) and switch on to its own satellite Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (INRSS) soon.

With the launch of the seventh IRNSS satellite in April 2016, India has completed the navigation satellites launching vehicle mission. Of the seven satellites, four navigation vehicles would be moving and three were geo-stationary on the longitude, he added.
