The decision to put cash in its employees’ pockets on the eve of the festival season would boost demand and address a major concern of the middle class, said Mr. Javadekar. The money would be paid into bank accounts via direct benefit transfers, and payment would be completed before Vijaya Dashami, he added.

Overall, almost 17 lakh non-gazetted employees of commercial establishments such as the railways, posts, defence production, EPFO and the ESIC will get Productivity Linked Bonuses for the year 2019-2020 to the tune of ₹2,791 crore.

Ad hoc or non-performance linked bonuses will be given to 13.7 lakh non-gazetted Central employees, with a financial implication of ₹ 946 crore.
