Government has limited role, says Mamata

Appeals to those connected with this trade to return to society's mainstream

Even as she ordered a probe on Thursday by the Criminal Investigation Department into the illicit liquor tragedy at Sangrampur in the Diamond Harbour sub-division of the South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee told the Assembly that the government had little role to play in such occurrences.

Despite this, it had announced compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to each of the bereaved families. “The families are not at fault. The government wants to help them.”

Describing the incident as the manifestation of a social evil, Ms. Banerjee said that to evolve a consensus on this issue, an all-party meet had been convened on December 19. Ms. Banerjee exhorted all those connected with this trade to return to the mainstream of life and take up a regular profession leaving behind ‘the lure of the lucre.'
