The death toll in the spurious liquor tragedy that struck at Sangrampur and adjoining villages in the Diamond Harbour subdivision of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district rose to 166 on Friday.

Nearly 100 others were still fighting for their lives in hospitals.

A shadow of death has descended on the area since Wednesday. Village ambulances kept ferrying the ill to the Diamond Harbour sub-divisional hospital.

Coming down from the opposite direction were rickshaw vans carrying the dead back to their homes.
