'The Working Elderly' national photography contest conducted by The Hindu received 2,873 entries that attracted more than 34,000 votes from various regions in India

1st Prize: Ashok Kumar: Life is not so easy! Photo taken at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

'The Working Elderly' , a national photography contest was conducted between June 30 and July 21 by The Hindu in association with >Birkbeck, University of London and the >Centre for Law, Policy and Human Rights Studies (CLPHRS), Chennai. Research undertaken by Birkbeck, University of London, and CLPHRS, found that elderly people work in every sector of the economy, particularly in low-paid work. Typically their work is invisible or denigrated and their status as workers is unacknowledged.

The aim of the contest was to reverse this situation by uncovering the work of the elderly people across the country, revealing the diversity of their work and demonstrating their contribution to family, society and economy through their determination and endurance.

The judges for the contest were
