Elderly people work in every sector of the economy, particularly in low-paid work. Typically their work is invisible or denigrated and their status as workers is unacknowledged. The aim of the contest was to reverse this situation by uncovering the work of the elderly people across the country, revealing the diversity of their work and demonstrating their contribution to family, society and economy through their determination and endurance.

Arup K. Mitra: This man is the senior-most "Jhapaniya" of a traditional snake charmer community in rural Bengal. He performs during the annual Manasa festival in Bishnupur in mid-August as part of a local tradition that is hundreds of years old.
