The Election Commission is examining compact discs containing poll speeches made by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Rajasthan as the BJP has complained that he made “unverified and distorted remarks” against the party on communal lines.
Besides the Chief Electoral Officer sending copies of the CDs with transcripts of Mr. Gandhi’s speeches made on October 23 at Churu and Kherli (Alwar), the BJP State unit has forwarded copies of the CD to the EC, informed sources said.
The BJP’s Election Cell convenr, R. Ramakrishna, said he had sent the complaint, alleging that Mr. Gandhi’s speeches violated the model code of conduct, which prohibits appealing for votes based on religion, caste and communities; criticism of other parties/workers based on unverified allegations or distortions, and creating hatred or tension among different religions/castes.
In another complaint, the BJP has sought action against the Congress government for allegedly giving private power companies a “letter of intent” after the model code came into force but with an antedate (date before the announcement of elections) for procurement of 960 MW by the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited.
