Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed shock at the earthquake, and the tsunami it triggered, devastating the eastern coast of Japan, and assured that country all possible help in relief and rehabilitation.
Dr. Singh conveyed this in a letter to his counterpart Naoto Kan.
“We have pledged to assist Japan in this time of devastation. The Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have written to their counterparts. Japan would decide whether it needs help. Just spoke with our Ambassador in Tokyo. All Indians are safe, according to presently available information. We have about 100 in Sendai,” Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said in a Twitter message around noon.

“Our embassy in Tokyo says no report of injuries to Indians in Tokyo. We'll keep you updated.”
“The External Affairs Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in Japan and will take all … steps required as per exigencies,” she added, in response to a question whether the government planned to evacuate Indians.
