Telangana announces holiday; Andhra to work extra hour

The Telangana government on Tuesday declared a holiday as a mark of respect to former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who died on Monday. However, schools and colleges in Bengaluru and Andhra Pradesh continued to funtion.

All government offices, educational institutions in Hyderabad and nine other districts of Telangana remained closed.

The Andhra Pradesh government has requested all the government offices and educational institutions to work an hour extra as a mark of respect for the departed soul.

No official holiday has been declared for schools and colleges on Tuesday, said Karnataka Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee. He claimed that the former President had earlier said that he did not want a holiday to be declared on the day after he died.
