A day after Japan was hit by a giant tsunami caused by a massive earthquake which has left hundreds dead or unaccounted for, India on Saturday said all its nationals are safe as per the information available so far.

“Just spoke with our Ambassador in Tokyo. All Indians safe acc (according) to presently available info. We have about 100 in Sendai," Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao tweeted on Saturday.

Ms. Rao also tweeted that India has pledged to assist Japan and that country would decide if it needed help.

According to reports, around 200 to 300 bodies were found in Sendai’s Wakabayashi Ward.

As rescuers have not been able to completely access the tsunami-hit areas with tsunami warnings still in effect, the overall picture of the destruction remained unclear.
