The former Supreme Court Judge V.R. Krishna Iyer on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the >Centre’s stand not to approve the elevation of senior advocate Gopal Subramanium as Supreme Court judge.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr. Krishna Iyer said he was disappointed by the stand as Mr. Subramanium was unanimously selected by the Collegium.

He said, “Mr. Subramanium is a sound lawyer with great integrity and will be a tribute to the Supreme Court Bench if he is installed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. However, to eliminate him from the post will be an indefensible disaster, a disappointment which the country need not suffer from at all.”

He said: “As a retired Judge of the Supreme Court myself, I regret this measure of the Prime minister. I hope he [Mr. Modi] will reconsider this wrong step. I look forward to great good things happening from the Prime Minister.”
