The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday registered a case against Indrani Mukerjea and two co-accused under eight Sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) relating to the alleged murder of Sheena Bora.
The case was registered following a request by the Maharashtra government, and a notification issued by the Centre. Other Sections slapped on Mukherjea, her driver Shyamvar Rai, and her ex-husband Sanjiv Khanna include Section 328 ( causing hurt by means of poison), Section 201, 202, 203 (destruction of evidence and giving false information), and Section 2 (25) of the Arms Act.
The registration of the case indicates that CBI has formally taken over the investigation from Mumbai police. The Mumbai police had arrested the three accused for allegedly conspiring to murder Mukherjea’s daughter Sheena Bora and disposing off her body in a deserted spot in Raigad district.

The Mumbai police investigations had abruptly stalled after Additional Director-General Rakesh Maria was transferred on promotion, as the probe reached a crucial stage after Maharashtra government perceived that Mr. Maria was taking personal interest in the case, and interrogating the accused. Mr. Maria had subjected Mukherjea's husband, Peter Mukherjea to intense grilling sessions for three consecutive days before his transfer.
