The Kozhikode Crime Branch (Hurt and Homicide Wing) on Wednesday arrested a youth on the charge of murdering an aged woman, Sundariamma, at Vattakkinar on the outskirts of the city more than a year ago.

A police team arrested Jayesh aka Jabbar aka Babu, 28, who had earlier worked as a cleaner at a hotel at Meenchanda bypass. Sundariamma, 65, was attacked in her house at 1.30 a.m. on July 21, 2012. The seriously injured woman died at the Government Medical College Hospital here.

Sundariamma, who was residing alone in one of the four row houses at Chirakkal Lane, used to make a living by selling homemade snacks, idlis, and dosas to small hotels. She supplied idlis to the hotel where Jayesh worked. Investigators said Jayesh had planned a trip to Goa in July when the hotel would be closed for Ramzan, and decided to rob the woman. Jayesh entered the house through the roof using a ladder which he had placed near the wall of the house. The police said that Sundariamma caught hold of his shirt while he was taking her purse from underneath her cot. He attacked her with the knife and escaped through the kitchen door, the police said.
