450 units have been allotted for Kozhikode

The Revenue Department and local elected representatives are all set to install water kiosks in areas facing acute water shortage in the district this week.

Kozhikode tahsildar K. Balan said one kiosk each would be set up at Nellikode, Velayanadu, and Chelavoor within the Kozhikode Corporation limits. He said 40 kiosks would be set up across Panniankara, Cheruvannoor, and Elathur. Seven of them would be allotted for Beypore as the coastal area suffers from water salinity.

B. Abdul Nasar, Deputy Collector, and chief executive officer, District Disaster Management Authority, said of the 450 kiosks allotted for the district, 120 each would be set up in Vadakara, Koyilandy and Kozhikode taluks and the rest in Thamarassery taluk.

“Ward-level committees involving elected representatives and Revenue officials will monitor the distribution of water through kiosks in grama panchayats. Within the Corporation limits, councillors will be part of it. Tahsildars will be in charge of the process,” he said. Mr. Nasar said the administration was already distributing water to various areas as per requirement. Asked about the restrictions in place for drilling borewells for domestic consumption, he clarified that no special permission was required for the purpose. “As per government direction, the diameter of the borewell should not exceed 4.5 ft and the depth should not be more than 80 feet,” he added.
