Three of family killed in accident

Three members of a family hailing from Keezhariyoor were killed when the car they were travelling in collided with a private bus at Mannooppara, near Iringal, in Vadakara on Wednesday evening.

The victims were identified as Thaikkandi Babu Kannan, 49; his sister Girija Rajan, 47; and her son Vishnu Narayanan, 21. Four others, including two children, from the family sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital. The condition of two of them was critical, the police said.

Girija Rajan was a teacher at Vasudevashram High School at Keezhariyoor, and Vishnu Narayanan was pursuing his BDS at a college in Bangalore. The family was on a trip to Vadakara.

The victims were taken out from the vehicle by a police team from the Payyoli station and Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Koyilandy.

The Payyoli police said the private bus, which was coming from Koyilandy, hit the car while overtaking a lorry. The driver of the bus, who fled the spot, was charged under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code for culpable homicide.

On Tuesday, a collision between a private bus and an autorickshaw had claimed the life of three youth on the same route. Wednesday’s accident was reported just hours after the funeral of the victims of the previous day’s accident.

Succumbs to injuries

A 32-year-old man who was knocked down by a car near Mankavu died at a private hospital in the city on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Kalathingal Ramesh from Thiruvannur. The police were yet to trace the vehicle, an Innova car.
