When Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan visited the Government Higher Secondary School, Hosdurg, here on Wednesday, he was given a memorandum by the students. Not for additional facilities in the school, but for the shelving of a reported move by Bevco to set up an outlet near their school.

The outcry by the students comes against the backdrop of Bevco’s decision to shift its outlet to a State-owned warehouse near the school ground, which is also a stone’s throw away from the court complex.

Bevco had to backtrack from its moves to relocate the outlet, situated close to the telephone exchange here, either to nearby Kallanchira or Padannakkad owing to stiff public resistance from the localities. The warehouse near the school meet the distance-wise legal stipulations for setting up liquor outlets near educational institutions, excise officials say.

The students in their memorandum said that PWD, electricity and block panchayat offices besides the Kendriya Vidyalaya too were functioning close to the warehouse. It is learnt that the Bevco authorities are making hasty moves to launch the outlet this month.

In response to the memorandum, the Speaker said that he would bring the issue to the notice of the authorities concerned.
