A consensus reached among different political parties helped in the smooth election of members to the standing committees of the City Corporation Council here on Monday.

The ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), comprising the Congress, India Union Muslim League and Janata Dal (United), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had nominated their members to the eight standing committees drawn up under the Kerala Municipal Act.

The LDF with 48 members (CPI (M)-44, NCP-2, CPI-1 and LDF-1) has majority in the 75-member council. The UDF has 20 (Congress-10, IUML-6, JD(U)-3 and IUML(India)-1) while the BJP, seven members.

All members, except Mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya were nominated to any one of the committees. Deputy Mayor Meera Darsak of the CPI(M) by virtue of her position will be chairperson of the Finance Standing Committee.

Initially, a woman councillor was nominated to each committee as one of the members on each committee was reserved for women. The LDF ensured that all of them were from the coalition.

Likewise the LDF also made sure that it secured a majority in all the standing committees. This would help it to get the post of chairpersons when the elections to these posts are held on December 4.
