SI suspended on bribery charge

Published - January 25, 2019 08:09 pm IST - Kozhikode

A. Habeebulla, Sub Inspector at the Kozhikode Medical College Police station, was placed under suspension on the basis of a preliminary inquiry into bribery charges and manipulation of station records. The suspension order was issued by District Police Chief (Kozhikode city) K. Sanjaykumar Gurudin on Friday.

The Sub Inspector had allegedly collected large fines from those held for petty offences. However, he was found to have shown lesser amounts in official records.

Mr. Habeebulla was at the centre of a controversy when he allegedly manhandled a 16-year-old boy outside a women’s hostel in the city in 2017. The officer was reportedly on his way to meet his fiancée at the hostel near Eranhipalam in the city. The youth had alleged that he was beaten up by the officer for questioning his presence near the women’s hostel.

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission had suo motu registered a case after noticing the incident. The Commission had come out with severe criticisms against the officer as he did not turn up before the panel during a hearing.

In a recent incident, the Sub Inspector was also accused of threatening a group of media persons who were covering an agitation on the premises of the Kozhikode Medical College. The officer wanted the media persons to go out of the medical college campus and stop shooting the protest. He had claimed that journalists entered the campus without the consent of the medical college Superintendent.
