Split among followers of the lslamic scholar

This July 29 will mark the 26th anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Islamic scholar P.K. Abdul Hassan Moulavi, popularly known as Chekannur Moulavi.

There has been a split among his followers in recent years with the Khur-aan Sunnath Society that the Moulavi founded dividing into two factions and organising separate events to mark his memory.

One faction, which calls itself the Khur-aan Sunnath Society central committee, is planning to observe it as a day against what they called “religious terrorism”.

The event will be held at the Indoor Stadium hall in the city. It will be followed by a remembrance meet in which social activists such as V.P. Zuhra are expected to attend.

Stress on harmony

Functionaries of this faction claim that the Moulavi had discovered from the Quran the ultimate truth present in all religious texts and the need for religious coexistence and harmony.

The other faction, named Khur-aan Sunnath Society (Forward Block), point out that they were upholding values such as humanity, social commitment, and affinity for knowledge.

Award for Elayidom

It has chosen Left-leaning academic Sunil P. Elayidom for an award in the Moulavi’s name, which will be presented at an event here on Monday. Poet Alankode Leelakrishnan and academic A.P. Ahmed are expected to attend it.
