The CPI(M) has demanded immediate intervention by the State government to restore the number of seats, 250 for admission to the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, and persuade the Indian Medical Council (IMC) to withdraw its decision to reduce the number by 50.
The CPI(M) district secretariat also blamed the State government for the IMC decision and held that the reduction in the number of seats would not have happened had the State government provided adequate infrastructural facilities at the medical college. T.P. Ramakrishnan, CPI(M) district secretary, was also quick to point out in a statement that the number of seats at the medical college was raised by 50 to 250 during the rule of CPI(M)-led LDF government since the government took the initiative to increase the infrastructural facilities there in order to make the intake of 50 more students possible.
The CPI(M) district secretary also alleged that both the Central and the State governments were trying to reduce facilities in government medical colleges with a view to helping private medical college managements.

The CPI(M) leadership has also threatened to organise an agitation against the UDF government if it failed to get the IMC cancel its decision and restore 250 seats for students at the medical college.
