The Mukkom police, on Thursday, arrested five of the 17 accused students in a ragging case reported from the KMCT Polytechnic College, Kallanthode.
The students were netted following a written complaint from Sarath Lal, one of the first-year students at the college, who was allegedly beaten up by the gang during a ragging attempt on Tuesday.
The arrested were K.C. Hari Shankar, 18; Chacko Thomas, 21; Nidhin Philip, 21; M.N. Jishin, 21; and S. Krishnakumar, 19. All the accused were charged under section 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (punishment for rioting armed with deadly weapons), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC.

They were later produced before the Thamarassery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
According to police sources, the incident leading to the arrest of the students was reported on Tuesday.
The complainant had suffered serious injuries on his face, including damage to the teeth. After the incident, the boy was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mukkom, the police said.

Seven of the 17-member gang have been identified by the police. One among them was a minor and he would be produced in the Juvenile Court in Kozhikode.
“Search is on to nab all the other accused in the case,” the police said.
