Project for Kozhikode city development on the anvil

The Ministry of Urban Affairs has come out with a five-point urban development plan for Kozhikode city.

The project ‘Redevelopment of Old Towns’, formally announced by Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhi Ali while addressing a meeting of engineers here on Sunday, would at first focus on the total renovation of the Palayam market and the existing bus stand. He said the old structures would be rebuilt in such a way to provide standard parking facilities for city buses and quality trading space for the local traders.

According to the Minister, a meeting of people’s representatives and leaders of various socio-political organisations would be arranged in Thiruvananthapuram on May 6 for planning and finalising the projects. “Under the scheme, a musical fountain will be established in Kuttichira. The medical college bus stand project also would be considered in addition to a separate project for Vengeri, he added.

Mr. Ali also said his department would form a 50-member committee comprising representatives from various organisations to look into the actual implementation of the project.

Mr. Ali expressed satisfaction over the recent amendments of the Kerala Municipal Building Rules.

He also said the Real Estate Regulatory Authority Bill planned by the government would bring in more transparency in the construction sector.
