Night-time adventure ends in accident, costs a student’s life

Thirst for adventure drove seven schoolchildren into a nightmare that six of them will want to forget.

The seventh one, 17-year-old Mohammed Labeeb, was killed when the car that he was driving his friends to Kuttikattoor from Kozhikode rammed a lorry parked by the roadside near Velliparamba in the early hours of Thursday.

The boys had sneaked out of their homes after midnight without the knowledge of their parents. According to the police, the accident occurred around 3.45 a.m. when the speeding car lost control while crossing a hump and hit the lorry.

The injured student have been identified as Amal Vinod, 16, of Edakkad, Anakh Thejas, 17, of Malaparamba, Roopan Jackson, 17, of Civil Station, Vineeth Kiran, 17, of Paroppadi, P. Akshay, 16, of Govindapuram and K. Wasim, 14, of Civil Station.

“The deceased Mohammed Labeeb is the son of Mujeeb, from Cherapuram near Kakkattil in the district. Labeeb was a Plus One student of Chinmaya Vidyalaya at Pottammal and was behind the wheel when the accident occurred,” the police said.

Two of the injured students have been admitted to the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital and the remaining are in private hospitals in the city. All of them have been injured on the head and are undergoing treatment in intensive care units.

Amal, Anakh, Roopan, and Vineeth are Plus One students of Chinmaya Vidyalaya while Akshay and Wasim are students of Ramakrishna Mission School, Kannanchery, and Presentation Higher Secondary School, Chevayur, respectively.

The traffic police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
