New Nanmanda sub RTO ready for opening

SRTO will have 10 panchayats under its jurisdiction

The new Sub Regional Transport Office (SRTO) at Nanmanda under the code ‘KL 76’ will start functioning on October 6. Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan will open the new office, which is expected to reduce the workload of Koduvally SRTO and Kozhikode Regional Transport Office.

The new SRTO will have 10 panchayats —Nanmanda, Narikkuni, Kakkur, Kuruvattoor, Chelannur, Kakkodi, Atholi, Thalakkulathur, Balussery and Panangad — under its jurisdiction. The opposition raised by some people’s representatives over the suspected flaws in finalising the jurisdiction of the new office too will be settled soon.

Decentralised working

At present, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has an RTO at Kozhikode, a rural RTO at Vadakara and two sub RTOs at Koyilandy and Koduvally. There is also a proposal to open two more SRT offices at Perambra and Ramanattukara. The MVD hopes that the decentralised operations will help them reduce the workload on their staff, speed up file processing and cater to more people in rural areas.

The MVD officials point out that the new unit will be able to carry out more awareness campaigns on safe driving and enforcement activities to track offenders. They have the required number of patrol vehicles and staff to ensure effective functioning. The office will function on the top floor of the Chelannur Excise Range office.

The proposal for the new SRTO at Nanmanda was announced by Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac in last year’s budget. He had also announced the government plan to open four more such sub offices at Iritty, Vellarikkundu, Thriprayar and Kattakkada.
