Milk price hike to benefit farmers: CM

August 17, 2014 09:51 am | Updated 09:51 am IST - Kozhikode:

With the price of every commodity skyrocketing, the government is forced to increase the price of milk for the welfare of the dairy farmers, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

Inaugurating the district-level dairy farmers’ convention organised by the Department of Dairy Development at Palazhi here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said that self-reliance in the dairy sector could not be attained if the farmers were facing losses and withdrew from dairy farming altogether. Hence, the price of milk was increased on condition that 90 per cent of the increase would add to the profit of the dairy farmers, he added.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed farmers’ facilitation and information centre of the Palazhi dairy producers’ cooperative society. He gave away to the host the award for the society that recorded maximum growth in collection in the last fiscal year.

The three-day convention began on Saturday with a training programme on food safety law, and was followed by a dairy quiz.
