A goodly number of people turned up at the Gujarati hall for a Rafi Night, organised by KALA (Kozhikode Art Lovers’ Association), braving heavy rain. They could enjoy some unforgettable Rafi gems, rendered skilfully by the city’s very own Muhmmed Fahad, who has been performing in England for some years now.

Fahad, about five years ago, was the biggest attraction of Calicut Music Club’s old Hindi film song shows. He had made a mark by singing Rafi numbers. On this night too, he brought ecstasy to the fans, rendering one popular song after another. Fahad got the loudest cheers for “Kya hua tera wada…” (

His diction was particularly good, he stayed in tune, and got the expressions right too. He was well-supported by V.S. Remya, a competent singer who accompanied him for a few duets such as “Deewana hua badal…” (

Kashmir Ki Kali ) and “Jhil mil sitaron ka…” (
Jeevan Mrityu ).

The only sour note in the programme was the less-than-perfect acoustics. Fahad and Remya deserved better.
