The Maoist presence in certain parts of the country is not just about law and order, but a social and political issue as well, said senior Congress leader V. M. Sudheeran.
Delivering the inaugural address at the Mohammed Abdurrahman Sahib commemoration programme here on Saturday, he said that the presence of Maoists in a particular area points toward injustice meted out to the people in that area from the administration as well as various lobbies.
“The programmes charted out by the governments for the benefit of common man are usually thwarted by certain vested interests, causing a serious challenge to democracy. So it is not a wonder when people support Maoists or even become silent bystanders to their activities in certain places where they face financial inequality of the highest order”, Mr.Sudheeran said.

He said that Mohammed Abdurrahman Sahib believed that the country needed financial freedom along with social and political freedom. He expressed his financial theories in such a way that the common people could follow, devoid of the jargons.
For him, a budget was useless, unless it provided for the poorest of the poor and treated the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ on a par.
He was often termed ‘the opposition within the ruling front’, but he was in truth only on the side of the public, Mr.Sudheeran said. He recalled Abdurrahman Sahib’s fight against corruption, communalism and untouchability and pointed out that his ideologies were quite relevant in today’s circumstances.

Mr.Sudheeran said that Abdurrahman Sahib was not just another freedom fighter, but a model for all the youngsters even 68 years after he passed away. He never drifted away from his beliefs and ideologies, he added.
M.I. Shanavas, MP, delivered the Mohammed Abdurrahman Sahib commemoration lecture on the occasion. President of the Mohammed Abdurrahman Sahib Memorial Committee N. P. Moideen, secretary T. K. A. Aziz and vice-president E.V.Usman Koya were present on the occasion.
