‘Lamp’ to shed light on new energy

The Laboratory for Molecular Electronics and Photonics (Lamp) of the Department of Physics at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) will host an international conference on ‘Light: Optics’ on the campus from Wednesday to Friday.

This was the second in a series of Optics and Photonics-based conferences being organised by Lamp, a press release issued here said.

Lamp focussed on research in organic photonic and electronic devices such as organics light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), organic or plastic solar cells, said a release here. The focal theme of the conference would be Organic Photovoltaics, the release said.

Due to the fast depletion of fossil fuels and the environmental issues related to coal and nuclear-based energy sources, solar energy was being projected as the hope for the energy-starving globe, the organisers said. Globally, huge efforts were being made by researchers, with the support of governments, to develop and propagate solar energy use, they said.

Though solar cells were widely being used, it was still not cost-effective. As of now, it was not technically efficient to cater to the ever-increasing energy needs of the world, they said.

The international conference was part of efforts by the Lamp to bring together scientists and researchers to discuss and share their experiences in this area. More than 150 papers would be presented, the organisers said.

A workshop on organic solar cells would also be organised. Cultural programs by NIT-C students and an excursion to Wayanad would also be part of the conference.
