The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is actively considering a proposal from various local self-government institutions to simplify the procedures for new water supply connections even as it is getting ready to start trial pumping under the multi-crore Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-aided Drinking Water Project in the city next month.
The government has given nod to KWA to start trial pumping.
A recent meeting chaired by Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice M.K. Muneer, who also holds the charge of the district, and attended by senior officials from the Water Resources Department approved a suggestion in this regard and granted permission to KWA Assistant Engineers too to sanction new connections.

As per the KWA figures, the quantity of drinking water being supplied in the district would witness a huge increase from 60 million litre a day (mld) to 260 mld. Drinking water will be available round-the-clock. Arrangements will be made to connect the new water supply pipelines at over 1,300 points to boost the existing supply. Ahead of the trial pumping, complaints in the already laid water supply network will be cleared under the supervision of a team of engineers.

An official communication from Dr. Muneer’s office said that the engineers would be holding sector-wise discussions with the City Corporation councillors to address local concerns and find out possible solutions ahead of the trial run. The sector-wise discussions would be held in seven locations.
The first of such discussions would be held at the City Corporation office on Sunday. The Minister, senior KWA officials and councillors would attend the meeting, the communication said.
