Implement Gadgil panel report, demands KSSP

September 02, 2014 01:38 pm | Updated 01:38 pm IST - Kozhikode:

The district committee of the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) has said that the implementation of the K. Kasturirangan report will not ensure the protection of the Western Ghats and that the Centre’s move to go ahead with the panel’s recommendation is unreasonable.

In a communication here on Monday, leaders of the Parishad said that the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had come to power by expressing its commitment to implement the Madhav Gadgil committee report, was not sticking to its declared policy. “The withdrawal clearly shows that some external forces have influenced the government’s decision,” they said.

According to the KSSP, only the Gadgil committee had studied the issues regarding the conservation of the Western Ghats thoroughly and come up with a scientific report with emphasis on the conservation of the rich biodiversity of the region. “Instead of rejecting such a report, it is essential to have a public debate and discussion on it,” they said.

Projecting the ‘flipside’ of the Kasturirangan report, the KSSP leaders said that the report was not comprehensive and it didn’t take consider any areas other than the already protected ones. “The implementation of such a proposal will pave way for the looting of environment,” they said.

As part of its ceaseless efforts to sensitise people to the Gadgil report, the KSSP organised get-togethers in various parts of the city on Monday. Leading environmentalists from the district took part in the protest meets and addressed the people.
