The District Disaster Management Authority has issued a high alert in coastal areas in Kozhikode district in the wake of an advisory from the India Meteorological Department that the low pressure area noticed south of Kanyakumari and south-west of Sri Lanka has developed into a deep depression.
Many parts of the district received mild drizzle to heavy rainfall on Tuesday evening as a result of this. It was a welcome relief from the rising mercury levels too. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. A wind speed of 65 km per hour and waves 3.8 metres higher than normal have been predicted in the next 48 hours.
District Collector U.V. Jose has directed officials in three village offices in Vadakara taluk and eight village offices each in Kozhikode and Koyilandy taluks to function round the clock.

Tahsildars have been asked to camp in the areas. Departments of Fisheries, Health, Forest, Police, and Fire and Rescue, and personnel from the Coast Guard and the Kerala State Electricity Board have been put on alert.
The advisory will be in effect till March 15.
