As part of popularising the toll-free 24-hour emergency helpline number (1098) for children in need of care and protection, the district unit of Childline organised a training programme for the Student Police Cadets (SPC) of the Government Ganapath Vocational Higher Secondary School, Feroke, at the Feroke panchayat community hall on Tuesday.
The programme, organised as part of the ‘Childline Se Dosti’ national campaign from November 14 to 20, was the fourth in a series of events held in different parts of the district, said M.P. Muhammadali, district coordinator of Childline. The cadets were given training in different areas, including how to go about rescuing a child in distress and how to report a case of drug abuse or sexual abuse in their vicinity.
As the SPCs are entrusted with maintenance of law and order at schools, they should be familiar with different issues, including substance abuse among students.

“Hence, giving them training in how to systematically tackle such issues and report them promptly was very important,’ said Mr. Muhammadali. In another session, the cadets were given a talk on the different services provided by Childline.
As many as 88 cadets, including 44 girls, attended the programme. Childline Deputy Director M. Abdul Jabbar and Mr. Muhammadali led the sessions.
Feroke police station sub-inspector M.A. Abdul Nasar inaugurated the programme. School headmaster K. Ashish spoke.

An awareness programme for parents on drug abuse and substance abuse among children will be held at the Perumanna panchayat community hall on Wednesday, said Mr. Muhammadali.
