H1N1 alert in Kozhikode district

With 35 H1N1 (Influenza) positive cases and one death due to the respiratory disease being reported from the district in November, the Health Department has issued an alert against its possible outbreak.

District Medical Officer V. Jayasree said in a release on Monday that the disease caused by Influenza type A virus is spread through air. There have been four deaths due to H1N1 (Influenza) in the district this year, and there are 130 positive cases. It spreads fast when the infected person sneezes or coughs and through his personal belongings. Those with low immunity are at high risk.

Fever, cough, breathing difficulty, body pain, sore throat, cold, shivering, fatigue, and muscle pain are some of the symptoms. There could be faster heartbeats and low blood pressure too.

The virus may not survive in atmospheric temperature, but in air-conditioned rooms. Dr. Jayasree said Oseltamivir tablets, used for the treatment, are available at all health centres. Children with symptoms should not be sent to schools. If more than one person exhibit symptoms, holding school assemblies should be avoided.
