Green Initiative Award for cities

The Earth Day Network, a Delhi-based nongovernmental organisation, has launched a competition for individuals, educational institutions, and organisations from 45 select cities in the country with one million plus population to receive the best Green Initiative Award in connection with the 45th anniversary of Earth Day this year.

Three cities in Kerala — Kozhikode, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram — have been included in the list, from which forums and individuals can vie for the honours.

Those who would like to participate in the pan-Indian contest may upload details, including photographs, paper cuttings, videos, or descriptions of an environmental problem in their respective city area (in the Corporation limit) and the solutions they have brought in for them.

“The competition is basically asking the citizens and different collectives to make their cities ‘Swachh’ (clean) and green, by participating in it,” B.V. Sureshbabu, State coordinator of the contest, said.

Residential forums, which have undertaken different green activities, including terrace farming and innovative waste management schemes, can also participate in the contest by uploading ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos and videos of the entry.
