The rural police will soon have GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking mechanism in all police vehicles.
According to official sources, the installation of GPS, with the assistance of the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON), will be completed within two months in all police stations. It will bring all vehicles under a single monitoring system.
The new facility is being introduced to track the location of police vehicles during duty time.

It will also help the police to scientifically locate the position of vehicles when they are exposed to attacks or accidents.
District Police Chief (Vadakara) P.H. Ashraf said the installation work would be completed under the direct supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of the Crime Records Bureau. “So far, eight vehicles have completed the installation of GPS facility,” he adds.
According to police officials, the space-based satellite navigation mechanism will streamline patrolling services in various parts of the rural areas and its proper surveillance by senior officers. Commands can also be given in accordance to the location mapping from a single console, they said

Earlier, a similar plan to install GPS device in all school buses in Kozhikode city had been mooted by the Motor Vehicles Department, but, it lost steam with the change in some of the top officers from the post.
It was in 2011 that the project was approved by the then District Collector, P.B. Salim. The facility was planned with a mission to help parents to track the movements of their children in the school vehicles.
