‘Flying Carpet’ to land in Kozhikode

Kozhikode is getting ready for ‘Flying Carpet’, a get-together of street magicians from all over the country on May 19.

The get-together is being organised by the Magic Academy in association with Kozhikode Municipal Corporation as part of the Academy’s golden jubilee celebrations.

The magicians who would meet at the Mananchira square at 5 p.m. will display the age-old traditional tricks like the Great Indian Rope Trick, Indian Basket, and Green Mango Tree. In fact, a Magic Utsav is being organised from May 19 to 22, of which the get-together is a part.

Struggling lot

The street magicians who showcase traditional tricks are a fast disappearing lot. The artists are struggling to make a livelihood at the face of poverty and neglect.

The Magic Utsav is an attempt to resurrect the art form and lend the artists a supporting hand.

The organisers have strived to contact as many families of street magicians spread across the country and bring them to the limelight.

The Magic Academy has devised various methods to rehabilitate the street magicians and Magic Planet is one of them. The street magicians will get their rightful place in the form of a permanent platform at the Magic Planet, which is undergoing construction at the KINFRA Film Video Park premises in Thiruvananthapuram.

As part of the Magic Utsav, a magic camp is being organised for children from Kudumbasree Balasabhas at the Town Hall on May 20. The camp is being organised to create awareness against liquor and drugs.

Besides, ‘World of Illusion’, an exclusive magic programme by chairman of the Magic Academy Gopinath Muthukad is being held on May 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. to collect fund for the construction of Magic Planet.

Tickets

The tickets for the show are available at special counters set up at Mananchira Square on May 19, at Town Hall on May 20 and at the Tagore Centenary Hall on May 21 and 22.

The Rs.10,000 ticket ensures entry for 10 people, 5 each on both the days of the show while the Rs.5,000 ticket ensures entry for five people for only one day. Rs.300 ticket per head for a show is also available.
