Excise forms squad to track down hooch dens

Move in the wake of death of tribesman after drinking adulterated liquor

The Excise Department has formed a new five-member squad under the supervision of the Deputy Excise Commissioner to track hooch dens and check the sale illicit liquor.

“The squad will act on tip-off we receive. It will also conduct flash inspections in suspected areas,” said Deputy Excise Commissioner V.R. Anilkumar. He said the squad was formed in the wake of a recent incident in which a tribesman from Kodenchery died after consuming liquor reportedly mixed with a pesticide.

The enforcement activities of the three strike forces which were constituted during the last Onam season have also been resumed in the district in the wake of the man's death and the subsequent vigil. They will be carrying out checking in all suspected vehicles, buildings and premises on a daily basis.

Tribal settlements in the remote areas of the district have been brought under the surveillance of local enforcement squads. The support of local informers will be enlisted at all possible levels to keep tabs on those who frequently visit such settlements for suspected liquor trade. The alleged involvement of some of the tribespersons in brewing liquor for sale too will be checked.
