An expatriates’ meet, organised by the Ithihadhu Shubbanil Mujahidheen (ISM) here on Sunday, called upon the Union government to take immediate steps at the embassy-level for addressing the concerns of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
The meet, opened by K.M. Shaji, MLA, expressed strong dissent over the “uncontrolled rise in flight ticket charges and the unnoticed labour exploitation” in the Gulf countries. It also appealed to the government to plan an effective rehabilitation package for the Gulf returnees, especially for those who lost their jobs recently following the strict implementation of the Nitaqat.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Shaji said it was time for the expatriate communities to think seriously of the way they utilised their income. “Making investments in unproductive sectors would only result in the worsening of existing situation,” he said.

The MLA also called upon the expatriates’ community to make productive investments, which would bring some positive changes in the society.
Indian Islahi Centre (UAE) vice-president Ashraf Aboobacker presided over the meet. A self-employment scheme for the Gulf-returnees was launched on the occasion. A.K. Saseendran, MLA, inaugurated the scheme.
