Dance, music to spice up Onam fete

Festivities to begin with celebrity soccer match on Friday

It will be a hectic week of festivities for the people of Kozhikode with the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) organising various programmes from September 5 as part of the Onam celebrations.

DTPC chairperson and District Collector C.A. Latha said here on Wednesday that a range of programmes, including performances by well-known singers and dancers, would be organised. “Programmes will be held at Koyilandy and Vadakara municipalities as well,” she said.

The celebrations will begin with a celebrity soccer match at the Christian College grounds here on September 5 evening, according to the organisers.

Panchayats Minister M.K. Muneer will inaugurate the festivities at the main venue (beach) at 5.30 p.m. on September 6. A dance performance by Kalamandalam Sathyavrathan and team (Onapoovili) and a music orchestra led by Bhargavi Pillai and team from Chennai will the highlights of the programmes on the day.

A music performance by playback singer Jonita Gandhi and team (September 9), a live show by Bangalore-based fusion rock band Lagori (September 10), stage show by DJ Shekhar and Guinness team (September 11), Ghazal concerts by Umbayi (September 6) at the Town Hall and Ramesh Narayanan (September 7) at Tagore Hall, and a kite-boarding festival on the beach (September 6 and 7) will be the highlights of the programmes.

Folk arts, including theyyam, folk songs and mudiyettu, will be staged at Mananchira Square while classical dance and music will be organised at Jubilee Hall and Samoothiri Hall respectively.

A theatre festival will be held at the Town Hall from September 7 and six recent productions will be staged as part of it.

Literary festival

A literary fete will be organised at the K.P. Kesava Menon Hall and contemporary performing arts will be staged at the Gujarati Hall.

Magic show, mappila art forms, yoga performance, tug of war, comedy show, painting camp, martial arts and floral carpet contest will be part of the festivities.

Mananchira Square, Samoothiri Hall, Jubilee Hall, Town Hall, Gujarati Hall, K.P. Keshava Menon Hall and the Beach will be among the venues.
