March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:57 am IST - Kozhikode:

The College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, (CET), the first engineering college in the State which turned 75 last year will have an active chapter of its alumni forum in Kozhikode with Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb inaugurating it formally in the city on Saturday.

Contributions

With a number of eminent engineers including A. Achuthan and R.K. Ramesh from the Malabar region being former students of the college, such a forum can make several meaningful contributions to the infrastructural and technological development of the Malabar region, said its organisers, who spoke on the occasion.

“The forum will have popularisation of appropriate technologies to ensure the overall development of the region among its priority areas,” said P.N.M. Musthafa, Kozhikode chapter president of the association.

Absence of right use

Absence of the right use of technology has been cited as the most important reason for the general backwardness of the region in various fronts.

“The forum will definitely be able to guide people and organisations in starting new developmental ventures in a sustainable way,” said Mr. Musthafa.

Creative interventions

Inaugurating the chapter in the presence of S. Sheela, the current principal of CET, Mr. Rabb urged alumni associations to make “creative” social interventions by undertaking critical responsibilities.

“Their activities should not be confined to facility get-togethers and cultural programmes alone,” said the Education Minister.

Stressing the importance of putting up concerted efforts for nation building, Mr. Rabb said that alumni forums such as these could make important contributions in the areas of education, environment protection, and charity works.

Better than government

“They can do even better than what the government can do in certain areas,” he said.

College principal Dr. Sheela presided over the function. CET alumni association vice president E.R. Premachandra Bose, Kozhikode Government Engineering College principal T.P. Baiju Bhai, the Kozhikode chapter office bearers Mr. Musthafa M. Suresh Babu and C.K. Jayakumar among others spoke.
