The Kozhikode District Association of the Deaf (KDAD) has called upon the State government to popularise sign language among the public and various government departments to ensure barrier-free communication for the aurally challenged.
The association leaders who raised the demand while explaining campaign details of the week-long International Day of Sign Languages observance here on Friday said the popularisation of sign language was vital for the effective rehabilitation of people with auditory disorders.
“It is easy to learn the sign languages. Each word has been simply defined in the sign language for easy communication. Anyone can pick it up with the support of readily accessible study materials or with the support of our organisation,” said KDAD president V.A. Yusuf.

He said more promotional programmes should be taken up by the government to circulate its importance among the Kerala community.
According to Mr. Yusuf, many had misunderstood that the sign language was only for aurally challenged persons.
The district-level observance of the International Day of Sign Languages will be held at Thamarassery Block Resource Centre on September 23. Karat Razak, MLA, will open the event.
