‘Brinda’s statement aimed at bypoll’

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat’s statement on the Supreme Court order in the Hadiya case is aimed at appeasing the Muslim vote bank in the Vengara Assembly byelection, Hindu Aikya Vedi leader K.P. Sasikala has alleged.

Ms. Sasikala was speaking at a civic reception accorded to her here on Wednesday. She said that efforts were on to trap the Muslim community in religious issues to divert their attention from development issues. Religion was a private matter and the community should not let politicians misuse their religious feelings for vote bank, she said. Ms. Sasikala said that if people belonging to different religions could co-exist peacefully, those from different religions should be able to lead married life too.
