Brigade is out to catch garbage dumpers

August 08, 2013 02:16 pm | Updated 02:16 pm IST - Kozhikode:

A Green Brigade is being deployed in Koyilandy to prevent dumping of garbage in open places. The brigade, consisting of volunteers from NGOs and youth clubs, would act as sentinels.

The move is an attempt by the municipality to build a vigilant public force and enforce clean habits as the first step towards keeping public places free from garbage.

Members of the brigade are being trained under the municipality’s Clean Habit Alert for a New Green Earth (Change) programme. The volunteers would be given uniforms and badges from the municipality. They would move around in motorcycle and would be given permission to follow and catch people who dump garbage by the wayside and hand them over to municipality’s Health officials as well as organise awareness programmes. Superintendent of Police T.K. Rajmohan and KILA faculty member V.K. Suresh Babu are leading the training sessions.
