Brain-dead person’s organs donated in Kozhikode

The organs of P.J. Mathew were harvested by a team of doctors led by transplant surgeon Rajesh Nambiar of Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS).

Five patients who were waiting for organ transplantation surgeries got a fresh lease of life when the relatives of a brain-dead patient from Meppadi in Wayanad district agreed to donate his organs.

The organs of P.J. Mathew, 41, who was declared brain-dead by the doctors at the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) here on Wednesday were harvested by a team of doctors led by transplant surgeon Rajesh Nambiar of MIMS.

It was on February 17 that Mr. Mathew was admitted to the hospital after he fell from a ladder while cleaning a room.

He was working at the Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences.

The organs, including liver, kidneys, and eyes were harvested as per the consent letter signed by his wife Jeshu Mary and elder brother P.J. Joseph.

Hospital authorities said one kidney was donated to a 30-year-old woman from Payyoli and the other to a 53-year-old woman patient of Kozhikode Government Medical College. While the liver was donated to a 36-year-old man at AIMS, Kochi, the eyes were donated to two patients at the Comtrust Eye Hospital, Kozhikode.

Doctors from the Kozhikode Government Medical College too rendered their service in the kidney transplantation surgery.

The body was later handed over to the relatives after post mortem.
