An action committee comprising parents and students, on Monday, foiled the attempt of the Education Department to close down the Palatt Nagar A.U.P. School in Thiruvannoor, which was listed as one of the uneconomic schools in Kerala.
The school premises witnessed stormy scenes as the action committee members locked horns with the Education Department officers led by an Assistant Education Officer who tried to close down the school building with the support of the local police.
Though the police tried to disperse the irate crowd, the attempt proved futile with the arrival of more protesters from the nearby regions. As tension prevailed in the area, the Education Department officials left the spot. They said the incident would be reported to the Court for further action. The closure procedure was initiated on the basis of a court order obtained by the school manager, they added.

Action committee members alleged that there were vested interests in seeking the closure of the school that was established in 1957. Now there are 17 students, five teachers and a non-teaching staff member here.
On last Monday, the Malaparamba A.U.P. school too had witnessed a similar protest.
The local action committee members, who foiled the attempt of the Education Department to close down the school building, had alleged that the school management had hidden motives in the incident.

They had also sought the intervention of the State government to take over the school.
