Auto drivers seek action against illegal services

December 23, 2014 11:15 am | Updated 11:15 am IST - Kozhikode:

The City Autorickshaw Drivers Coordination Committee has appealed to the police to take legal action against drivers who run taxi services without obtaining proper permit from the Road Transport Authority (RTA).

In a communication here, leaders of the coordination committee said drivers with RTA permit were facing a huge loss owing to the unlawful practice.

“Only 4,338 autorickshaws are legally allowed to operate city services,” they said.

A. Mammad Koya, convener of the coordination committee, said the city lacked proper comfort stations near autorickshaw stands. “The city Corporation should look into the issue seriously,” he said.

Justifying the recent strike organised by the coordination committee seeking a revision of travel fare, Mr. Mammad Koya said it was not just the increase in fuel price that had prompted the strike. “The cost of spare parts, tyres, insurance premium, and maintenance charges matter a lot in the finalisation of travel fare,” Mr. Mammad Koya said.
