‘Communal forces showing fascist tendencies a cause for concern’

Kozhikode: An alternative should emerge to counter communal forces gaining ground across the country, historian M.G.S. Narayanan has said.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Fascism in the post-World War scenario’ organised by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) here on Wednesday, he said communal forces exhibiting fascist tendencies were a cause for concern, and that it was yet not clear who would counter them.

“What we see today is corporate capitalism. It has no face unlike factory capitalism of the 19th century or market capitalism of the 20th century. Rulers might show dictatorial tendencies, and there could be communal tension, which is being interpreted as fascism. I’m not sure who will oppose them,” Mr. Narayanan said.

He added that the Congress party could have ideally been a platform to oppose such forces, but it was on the path of decay due to the dominance of a single family and sidelining of talented leaders. The seminar was organised as part of the centenary celebrations of the Russian Revolution.
